The Douglas Woolcock Transport Project is a small, local charity that provides transport in adapted vehicles for wheelchair users and those with mobility issues or disabilities which make it difficult for them to access other forms of transport.
We prioritise support getting to and from medical appointments but also help with a wider range of social transport needs, such as meeting with friends and family.
We are entirely funded by public donations and all of our staff are trained volunteers who give their time freely.
We collect you from your home and take you into town to do your shopping, attend church or chapel, or simply to enjoy a cup of tea or lunch with friends.
We can also take you to healthcare appointments at Cape Cornwall Surgery, St Clare Medical Centre in Penzance or to any of the hospitals and clinics between Land's End and Truro.
In the summer we can take small groups to local beauty spots for an hour to enjoy our fantastic scenery.
Everyone we collect will be returned to their home.
Yes, if you live within the catchment area for Cape Cornwall Surgery, St Just.
For shorter trips we ask for donations towards the cost of fuel and vehicle running costs. For longer trips we have set mileage charges. We will let you know which applies to you when we confirm your booking.
All our drivers and assistants are volunteers who give their time, care and attention freely to support their local community.
By phoning or texting our Transport Co-ordinator, Lauren, on 07899 412 060.
Please book as far in advance as possible to avoid dissapointment.
Lauren is available between 7:30 - 18:00. Please leave a message with as much information as possible and she will call you back to confirm costs and availability.
The success of our project depends on not only people using the service but also on people volunteering to drive the vehicle. Our volunteers are all trainedin wheelchair handling and assessed for driving a vehicle. If you would like to volunteer to drive for us please contact Mrs Elisabeth Thomas on 01736 788527.
The Douglas Woolcock Foundation Trust began in 1988 following the death of Douglas Woolcock. Landlord of the Commercial Hotel, St Just.
During his illness, it was so difficult to obtain specialised equipment through the NHS, such as a pressure relieving mattress, that he requested any donations at his funeral were not to be spent on flowers but given to Cape Cornwall Surgery in St Just to help support the local community with such items.
Neither Douglas, nor anyone else, imagined that the trust would still be going today, yet it continues to flourish through the many kind donations, often from people like hime who needed extra comfort in the last few months of their lives.
In 1994 the fund became an official charity and continues to improve the lives of people in need within the catchment area of Cape Cornwall Surgery. The Trust now focuses it's services on transport, using two vehicles which have been specially modified for wheelchair users and others who have difficulty accessing other forms of transport.
